TOP FIVE: NBA Point Guards
/Hey all, in our podcast, Chris and I gave our first on-air top-five list. This has been a staple in our family, sparking many a debate. Here's the list I read, jump to my brother's page to see who he included, or head over to our podcast: What Are You Talking About to hear both of us discuss our lists. I went a different route with this list, though the results may look the same. I picked the five best PGs just going off of the 2014-15 season. No history behind it. Enjoy.
1.) Stephen Curry- Golden State Warriors; 23.6 ppg, 7.6 apg, 4.7 rpg
The best player on one of the most talented teams in the league. Curry has always been lights-out from beyond the arc. Now he dropping dimes, threes, and playing good perimeter defense. A serious MVP candidate at this time in the season.
2.) Russell Westbrook- OKC Thunder; 25.9 ppg, 7.4 apg, 6.3 rpg
Russ is the best attacking point guard in the league. The position isn't just about shooting threes and creating assists. To be one of the best you have to attack the rim, and none are better at that than Westbrook. Second in the league in terms of PER, tops among all point guards.
3.) John Wall- Washington Wizards; 17.3 ppg, 10.2 apg, 4.5 rpg
By virtue, the league leader in assists deserves to be on this list. Wall is now the unquestioned leader of his team. His scoring numbers are down just a tick, but that can be owed to the grind-it-out style of basketball his Wizards are playing.
4.) Kyrie Irving- Cleveland Cavaliers; 21.9 ppg, 5.3 apg, 3.3 rpg
Kyrie is the most complete offensive point guard in the game. He is a perfect blend of three-point shooting, driving to the basket, finishing, and ball-handling. He's always been a defensive liability, but has significantly stepped his effort up. Of course, having #23 on the wing helps too.
5.) Mike Conley Jr.- Memphis Grizzlies; 17.4 ppg, 5.4 apg, 3.3 rpg
I assume this will cause a unison gasp from the audience. Yes, I left out the likes of Chris Paul, Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry, and Jeff Teague. Those four PGs are all superstars or superstars in the making. But Conley is the general on a legitimate NBA Finals contender. He is responsible for setting up his twin-tower duo of Z-Bo and Marc Gasol. He has to shut down Western Conference point guards every night. Even if his inclusion on my list upset you, my job is done: you're finally talking about Mike Conley Jr.
Let me know what you think.
